Stapleton used violence and threats of violence against young women Staff Report A Springfield man was sentenced to multiple life prison terms in federal court in Peoria Friday for trafficking young women for sex. Franshon Stapleton, 48, was ordered by U.S. District Judge James E. Shadid to serve a life sentence for each of the four counts of sex trafficking. The sentences will be served concurrently with additional five-year terms for each of the 13 related charges. Stapleton pleaded guilty on Sept. 28 as his trial was set to begin. Stapleton ran the prostitution ring from a motel in Champaign where he lived, and recruited women from Sangamon, Champaign and Peoria counties.

I-74 near French Creek to be periodically closed for construction tonight

December 18, 2020 Work is being done on Interstate 74 between Galesburg and Peoria Friday night. The Illinois Department of Transportation says that the periodic full closure of I-74 over French Creek about a mile west of the Peoria/Knox County Line beginning at around 10:00 pm. Work is expected to last until 6:00 am Saturday as crews place new bridge beams. Electronic message signs will be in place to remind motorists and Illinois State Police will be present prior to any closings. Drivers are asked to avoid the area if feasible, using alternate routes, and to pay close attention to changing conditions and signs in the work zones as well as obey posted speed limits and avoid using mobile devices.
