Peoria and Tazewell Counties Amateur Radio Clubs prepare for disasters
PEORIA/TAZEWELL COUNTIES (HOI) When disaster strikes and powerlines go out, radio communication is essential. Events preparing for those disasters took place this weekend in Peoria and Tazewell Counties.
Over in Peoria County, the 102-year-old Peoria Area Amateur Radio Club hosted their event at the Shoppes at Grand Prairie.
The 24-hour field day started at 1 pm on Saturday and ended at 1 pm on Sunday.
The day was set up to train radio amateurs on how to work off the grid in emergency situations.
Throughout the year, club member, Justin Flick, said they help out at events like marathons or firework shows to ensure communication.
