this implausible notion that he could be reinstated over the summer. folks we have been speaking to seem to be cooling on that idea and are looking more towards 2024. and fred, finally, one name that we keep hearing over and over and over again this weekend is a potential 2024 candidate, people who would like to see run, is florida governor ron desantis. we re hearing that name from a lot of people gathering outside cpac here today, people who didn t get tickets to get into the event, but many are gathering out here, hoping to get a glimpse of trump as his motorcade enters this complex. donie o sullivan and sara murray, thank you so much for dallas. let s talk more about all this now with david swurlic, cnn political commentator and assistant editor for the washington post. so good to see you. good to see you, too. is this the possible comeback moment for the former president at cpac today? i think president trump likes
yearning for. the folks womspokeswoman was about change and i think it s interesting. i do think that he s going to have to address it and actually i have a different opinion about hunter biden doing this today. he did do something in that interview, which is that he actually acknowledged that he probably wouldn t have gotten any of this if his father weren t who his father is. and to your point, cornell, there is a lot of it going around in washington, d.c. i don t know how joe biden is going to address it tonight. i do think it s critical that people know, if true, that he, himself, didn t do anything specifically to grease those wheels or to set his son up, that this was hunter pursuing these opportunities on his own. which is our understanding, but i think that is one point that needs to be made clear, if true. if we re going to go down this road, there s a lot of people sitting in congress who
similarities than differences. both seem to be a spur of the moment decision on politics. both seem to be based not on the advice of advisers. i think now we need to know the president s phone calls with erdogan in the same way we ve seen the president s call with ukraine. if these two issues were combined, how many republican votes would there be? it shouldn t be that complicated. here is where your point is very important. the big excuse of reluctant trump supporters, trump acquiescers, people who didn t like him, thought he was bad news, look, he says these things in the oval office but you know what, the country is chugging along, don mcgahn didn t shut down the mueller investigation, jim mattis didn t do what he wanted to do in the defense department. a year ago it was possible to say we still have a mostly functioning administration despite a president who has no
presidential. the thing she did that was kind of amazing, she had a pen in her hand. bring those bills and i will sign them on the resolute desk. there was an image of her just being fully in command. i think that s going to really stick with a lot of people. it was unmistakable this idea this is a leader who was ready to take on really big challenges. it was just a masterful performance. i was going to ask you about electability. i think these were not problems she had. they may have been questions the broader electorate, people who didn t watch her on the hill or sit glues to the barr hearings. these are questions she answered, electability, i think she answered hunger in the democratic party for generational change. she answered questions and hunger for a woman in that office. she answers the question and speaks to the issue of hunger for diversity. she s the answer to almost every question i hear democrats asking. i think she also found a very deft way to deal with one of her
organizing a very grassroots campaign and broadening the base for the party with women, people of color, millennials, people who didn t just vote in the last elections. i think senator harris is going to be the nominee, and i think that members of the candidates who are running now will broad than base, which will make sure that we win in november. there s no doubt she is a very, very impressive candidate. let s get to this issue here about the anti-abortion bans because not only are you the author of the each woman act, which gives women equal access to abortion coverage, you re also the co-chair of the pro-choice caucus. i want to take a listen to what senator kirsten gillibrand said earlier. this is nothing short of an all-out assault on women s reproductive freedom. i hope america s women are paying attention because president trump has started a war on america s women. if it s a fight he wants to have, it s a fight he s going to have and he s going to lose.
