DLP faces oblivion unless DePeiza goes - Lashley

March 3, 2021 The Democratic Labour Party (DLP) could “disintegrate into oblivion” amid the resignation of several high-profile members, unless DLP leader Verla DePeiza steps down, a former parliamentarian Hamilton Lashley suggested Tuesday. With at least five members quitting the party so far this year, the general membership should now be asking DePeiza to give up the presidency, particularly since the next general elections could be called any day now, he suggested. The next poll is constitutionally due in 2023. He told Barbados TODAY: “Being what it is, there is an urgent need within the Democratic Labour Party for consultation, for mitigation, to really look at the situation as it is. The situation is urgent and it is one that begs for serious attention because you cannot let one of the leading political institutions in the region disintegrate into oblivion. And if the members of the Democratic Labour Party are serious, then they would call an emergency meet

Private sector chief on lockdown: Unnecessary but we ll comply

January 28, 2021 The two-week lockdown has not gone down well with a key spokesman of the private sector, despite the full backing of the trade union movement, the medical profession and the island’s key political players. While the business community has said it will adhere to the order for the country to halt all but essential business operations from Wednesday, Edward Clarke, the chairman of the Barbados Private Sector Association is adamant that the action by the Mia Mottley administration is unnecessary. The position emerged from talks between the Social Partnership and Government in recent days. On Tuesday night, the Prime Minister outlined several restrictions that would take effect from next Wednesday which are aimed at bringing community spread of the coronavirus under control.

January 19, 2021 It may serve the leadership of the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) well to begin paying greater attention to Senator Caswell Franklyn’s Unity Workers’ Union (UWU). From our position in the public square, it appears that there is growing confidence in the fledgling UWU, and more specifically its leader, who has shown great tenacity and dogged commitment to the ideals of protecting the ordinary worker against exploitation by this island’s employers. We would never argue that there is no place for an expanded number of trade unions. There is nothing wrong with choice. But after seven decades of stellar contributions to workers’ rights and empowerment, it is sad to witness the BWU’s apparent diminishing standing.
