Malaria tops OPD attendance in Akuapem North
The Akuapem North Municipality has recorded a total of 10,021 cases of malaria between January and October this year, topping the list of all diseases reported at the Out-Patients Department (OPD) of health facilities in the area.
The figure comprised 2,531 reported cases of under-five malaria and 156 cases of malaria in pregnancy, even though it indicates a slight decrease in the recorded cases of malaria in the previous year, malaria remained the number one cause of OPD attendance in the municipality.
This was made known at a stakeholders dialogue on the 0.5 District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) for malaria-related activities, under the People for Health Project being implemented by a consortium including Send Ghana, Pensplusbytes, and the Ghana News Agency, at Akropong.
Budgetary failures at MMDAs affront to fight against malaria
The failure of the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to prioritise malaria control programmes in the district s financial plans and budgets is an affront to measures to fight the disease.
Again the absence of guidelines and weak compliance for the utilisation of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) for malaria, slighted the values intended to be achieved in the fight against the disease.
These came to light during a sensitisation workshop at Adaklu to seek information towards addressing how the 0.5 percent was being used to fight malaria at the local level.
Local assemblies must show resolve to part with malaria funds 18th Dec 2020 | Source: GNA
Mr Amin Abdul Muntalib, Health Director for the Krachi East Municipality, has called on local assemblies to commit to the fight against malaria by prioritising the release of allocated funds.
He said although the assembly responded to requests for malaria support, he was unsure whether or not it was being drawn from the malaria allocation.
Mr Muntalib, who made the call at a policy meeting on malaria held at Dambai, said there was poor coordination towards managing the 0.5 percent of the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) set aside for malaria programming.
DACF Secretariat to deduct 0.5 malaria fund at source 18th Dec 2020 | Source: GNA
The People for Health project, has called on the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) Secretariat to deduct the 0.5 percent of the malaria fund at source to ensure its efficient use.
It said the current system, where the funds were transferred as part of the assemblies’ resources did not encourage the assemblies to comply with the directives of setting aside the 0.5 per cent for malaria programmes.
It urged the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to open separate bank accounts for the fund while the National Malaria Control Programme provided guidelines for the utilization of the fund.
