Brilliant and inspirational - tributes to former Leader editor

A campaigning editor who played a key role in launching North Wales first evening newspaper nearly 50 years ago, has died at the age of 87. Former colleagues have hailed Peter Leaney as one of the best in the business and an inspirational mentor to dozens of young journalists. Peter, from Cefn-y-Bedd, near Wrexham passed away on May 1 at Wrexham Maelor Hospital. He had suffered ill health for a number of years. He was the Leader s first news editor when the paper was launched in 1973 by the then Oswestry-based Woodalls group, which later became North Wales Newspapers (NWN), based at Mold, before being taken over by Newsquest in 2017.

Plea for people to be respectful while visiting Wrexham Crematorium after reports of a wild bird being killed

Posted: Tue 20th Apr 2021 Plea for people to be respectful while visiting Wrexham Crematorium after reports of a wild bird being killed Wrexham Council have issued a plea for visitors to the Pentrebychan Crematorium to be respectful of the area after reports of a “small minority who are taking advantage of the peaceful surroundings”. The local authority say there have been been reports of a wild bird being killed at the site – along with complaints about inappropriate language from visitors. The crematorium handles over 1700 cremations per year and many people return to visit the final resting place of their loved ones to mark occasions. They use the visit as a time of reflection and memorial and appreciate the surrounding grounds.
