(Keith Srakocic/AP) The U.S. Defense Department’s internal watchdog office is launching an evaluation this month to see what the U.S. military has been doing when it comes to UFOs, or in modern-day Pentagon parlance, “UAPs,” short for “Unidentified Aerial Phenomena.” The Defense Department’s Office of the Inspector General announced in a May 3 letter that the evaluation will seek to “determine the extent to which the DoD has taken actions regarding Unidentified Aerial Phenomena.”

A filmmaker in possession of US Navy footage showing pyramid-shaped UFO’s flying off the coast of California believes the footage is the best the world has ever seen. The Pentagon has confirmed that the 18-second video of
three UFO’s hovering over the USS Russell in July of 2019 is authentic.
It’s the first footage the public has seen of the unmanned aerial vehicles that reportedly harassed at least three warships during military drills over multiple days two years ago. At one point, the
UFO’s matched the speed and bearing of one destroyer for 90 minutes off the coast of San Diego.

What’s behind unidentified aerial phenomena observed by military officials? Are we alone in the universe? Nextgov asks some experts.
It can be difficult to discuss unidentified flying objects, especially for a government. While some may dismiss reports as fantasy, others argue that whatever is going on could be a threat to national security.
“In the past, pilots were afraid to report these strange things happening for fear it would affect their advancement in the officer corps,” former Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., told
Nextgov in this episode of Critical Update. While he was in Congress, Reid helped secure funding for the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, a quiet, UFO-studying effort that became public in late 2017. That group is now considered a precursor to the Pentagon’s Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force.
In Search of Alien Life
In a review of current debates about whether extraterrestrials have visited Earth, Elizabeth Kolbert discusses the Fermi paradox, which asks, in reference to aliens, “Where are they?” (Books, January 25th). Some useful context is the Rare Earth hypothesis, which argues that advanced life is an extremely unlikely outcome of Darwinian evolution; after all, life required nearly four billion years almost one-third of the age of our universe to develop on Earth. There is growing consensus that intelligent life here may well have depended on improbable contingencies such as the Chicxulub asteroid impact, sixty-six million years ago, which obliterated the dinosaurs. Fermi’s question, seen in the light of the Rare Earth hypothesis, could yield the answer “They are not there.”
