Orono High principal named new Union 93 superintendent

Union 93 includes the towns of Blue Hill, Surry, Penobscot, Castine and Brooksville.
Reg Ruhlin will replace Mark Hurvitt, who is retiring effective July 1.
The Union 93 Board voted unanimously to hire Ruhlin at its meeting Monday at the Penobscot Elementary School.
Ruhlin is currently principal of Orono High School.
“I’m really interested in the school union organization,” said Ruhlin. That includes the “really community-centered schools in each of the five towns.”
During the interview process, the people involved, including principals, parents and others, “felt really warm, welcoming and committed,” he said.
Lights Parade Saturday: Penobscot to Stonington.

An organization that works with people in need from 10 different towns is bringing a little holiday spirt to their communities. Community Compass based in Blue Hill, will hold a Festival of Lights automobile Parade this Saturday. The dozens and dozens of cars and trucks, and hopefully more, will be decorated and will begin the parade at about 3:30 Saturday the 19th from Penobscot Elementary School. The parade will travel through Sedgwick and onto Deer Isle and Stonington, and end 38 miles later at the Island Community Center.

The Maine CDC reports 406 new cases of COVID-19 statewide and 56 more people who have recovered. Currently, officials say 173 people are hospitalized including 42 in critical care, and 15 who are on ventilators.
A petition started by parents concerned about the Bangor school department s decision not to include any snow days into the calendar year has had an impact. Interim Superintendent of Schools Kathy Harris-Smedberg announced Wednesday that they will keep two snow days, after hearing parents input. Any stormy days after those two are used will be transitioned to remote learning days.
