Who is George Croghan and why are they celebrating him Saturday in Mechanicsburg
Updated 9:41 PM;
The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission on Saturday morning is planning to hold a dedication ceremony that will include the unveiling of a marker honoring George Croghan.
The 10 a.m. ceremony will take place at the residence of Rev. Dr. Stephen and Anne Gallaher; 401 Skyport Road, Mechanicsburg. It is open to the public.
Croghan was an Irish immigrant and land speculator who launched one of the largest and most effective British trade networks in America beginning in the 1740s, according to a release sent out earlier today. From his original trading post at 401 Skyport Road, he expanded as far as the French-controlled Ohio Country and into present-day Michigan and Illinois. He learned several Native American languages, embraced Native American customs, and kept his word in negotiations, the release said.
