Investigation launched after man from Cornwall dies in boat tragedy

An investigation has been launched following an incident on a fishing trawler in which one man died and another crew member was injured.
A lifeboat from St Mary s was called at 6.30am with a coastguard helicopter and the Penlee lifeboat attended when the fishing boat got closer to Newlyn.
Devon and Cornwall Police said the incident sadly resulted in the death of a 50-year-old man from the Torpoint area.
Lifeboat volunteers with a combined 300 years service in west Cornwall have been honoured by the RNLI. Long-service awards have been presented to Penlee Lifeboat Station members Janet Madron, who has served 50 years, Rosalie Whitlock (50 years), Andrew Munsen (50 years), Dr Mike Hersant (50 years), Roy Pascoe (40 years), Margaret Pascoe (30 years) and Margaret Pomeroy (30 years). Janet, who is branch chairman, has received the RNLI s 50 years service award for her voluntary fundraising. She originally became involved at Penlee when her husband Stephen joined the RNLI, and although Janet lost her husband in the Penlee Lifeboat disaster of 1981 her unstinting efforts for the RNLI have continued.
Police said officers were first called to Helston at 8.45pm yesterday, following reports of a missing teenager. Porthleven Coastguard Team said it was then paged just after 9.30pm to help look for a high risk missing person between Porthleven Pier and Loe Bar. Members of Mullion Coastguard Rescue Team were also called out to help, along with Penlee Lifeboat to search from the water. Porthleven Coastguard sent out three search teams to search from the pier to the beach at Loe Bar, while the Mullion volunteers formed two teams to look a little further along the coast, in the Fishing Cove area of Gunwalloe – one team on the beach and the other on the coastal path.
