China’s “wolf warrior” diplomacy has improved Taiwan’s international standing, as Beijing’s methods draw a backlash from Japan and the EU, academics said last month.
Tokyo and EU leaders on May 27 jointly called for peace in the Taiwan Strait, saying that they are “seriously concerned about the situation in the East and South China Seas.”
“We underscore the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and encourage the peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues,” a statement signed by Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel said.

A meeting of Taiwanese, US and Japanese lawmakers is being discussed, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said yesterday, while an exclusive report by Kyodo News on Wednesday said that a teleconference might be held at the end of this month.
The All-Party Parliamentary Group of the Japanese Diet has held discussions with Taiwan and the US about convening talks on controlling COVID-19, advancing Taiwan’s bid to participate in the WHO as an observer, and reaching an agreement on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co pledging a stable provision of semiconductors to Japan and the US, Kyodo News said.

Civil groups yesterday recommended alterations to proposed regulations encouraging the establishment of semiconductor institutes, saying that China has been using cross-strait academic collaboration to steal technology.
The Legislative Yuan’s Education and Culture Committee on March 22 passed a preliminary review of a bill on innovation in industry-university cooperation and talent cultivation in national key areas, which would relax restrictions and provide funding to encourage closer collaboration between sectors, facilitating research and training of highly skilled workers.
