GEORGE TOWN: His bloodied shirt and the sight of the dead when the Sultan Abdul Halim ferry terminal in Butterworth collapsed are etched permanently into Datuk Seri Dr Ooi Eng Hock’s mind.
GEORGE TOWN: On July 31, 1988, the Pengkalan Sultan Abdul Halim jetty platform collapsed under the overload of thousands of passengers scrambling to board ferries to get across to the island.
GEORGE TOWN: Burning a seven feet tall replica of the Penang ferry, a paper effigy of the King of Hades (Tai Su Yeah in Hokkien) and almsgiving were part of the prayer ceremony held on the 34th anniversary of the collapse of the Sultan Abdul Halim ferry terminal bridge.
GEORGE TOWN: Penang is primed for a tourism rebound with the arrival of a second cruise ship at the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) today, a sight not seen for more than two years.Penang Port Commission chairman Datuk Tan Teik Cheng said Resorts World Cruises’ Genting Dream, carrying 3,325 tourists and 1,700 crew members, would call at Penang at 8am.
GEORGE TOWN: The arrival of a cruise ship bringing in foreign tourists to the shores of Penang after a two-year hiatus was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the year for the pandemic-battered business community here.
