Ahead of the weekend, Gardaí have once again called on the public not to flout the COVID-19 restrictions, in order to help stem the spread of the virus.
The call comes after An Garda Síochána revealed they have issued more than 400 fines for non-essential travel since they commenced enforcing fines for breaches of the travel restrictions on Monday of last week.
Gardaí said the vast majority of those, more than 300, were issued over the past weekend for suspected incidents under Operation Fanacht for breaches of public heath regulations relating to non-essential travel. As of last Friday evening (January 15), 74 fines for non-essential travel had been processed. The fines issued over the weekend will now be checked and processed. Once these are processed, definitive figures will be available later this week, said a Garda spokesperson.

Local gardaí are appealing to people to stay at home this weekend as Covid-19 related deaths continue to rise. Covid-19 remains a significant threat to our society. Covid-19 related deaths are rising. Hospital admissions are increasing. ICU departments are at capacity. Unfortunately, there is also a minority of people who are not complying. These people put everybody’s health at risk, which impacts on individuals and our society, said Superintendent of Kilkenny Garda Station, Derek Hughes. Throughout this pandemic the vast majority of people have been compliant with public health advice. We thank them for that. We know this hasn’t been easy and has involved great sacrifices.
Level 5 Garda Checkpoints such as in Newbridge today can issue €100 fines for non-essential travel

These are the powers available to gardaí at checkpoints since Monday.
A Checkpoint was operated at Ballymany Roundabout on the outskirts of Newbridge today.
Under the offence guidelines, those in breach of mask regulations can also be fined €80.
Under Level 5, people are asked to stay at home, except for travel for work, education or other essential purposes, or to take exercise within 5km of home.
In a statement issued this afternoon, An Garda Síochána said it will continue to operate a significant number of static and mobile checkpoints, as well as conduct high visibility patrolling, this weekend focused on non-essential travel.
