Pembroke Dock has lost one if its most loyal supporters with the death of Ron Garner-Watts. Twice mayor of the town – between 2005-2006 and again in 2008-2009, he was also a passionate supporter of many organisations in the town – not least the Pembroke Dock Museum Trust and later the Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre. He was honorary curator of the Gun Tower Museum. As a very new army recruit on his first posting, Ron Garner-Watts came to Pembroke Dock to join his Royal Artillery unit – the well-remembered 22 Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment - in 1957. His fascination with the military history of the town which later became his family home has led, over 60 years later, to the publication of a very detailed history of the military connections, in his aptly titled book ‘Garrison Town’.
Access to the Military Cemetery in Pembroke Dock has been blocked for more than five days after a tree was damaged during recent storms. A spokesperson for Pembroke Dock Town Council said: It has been identified that a large tree on the west wall of the Military Cemetery has taken damage losing a limb to the floor and two damaged limbs remaining in the tree. To ensure the safety of visitors to the Military Cemetery the gates have been closed until the damaged limbs have been made safe and removed. As of yet the town council has not received a time scale for when the cemetery will be reopened. There is currently fencing barring entrance into the cemetery, which usually receives daily visitors.
In his latest venture, he has written an autobiography about his time in Pembrokeshire. The book A Pembrokeshire Pentacle is the sixth of seven books published by Mr Jackson. It tells of his adventurous life between the years of 1967 to 1984, when he lived in Pembrokeshire. In this time George started out as a holidaymaker, then became a resident police officer for Milford Haven, Dale, Marloes, Little Haven and St Ishmaels. This was followed by a period as an administrator working with the then Herald Bard of Wales, Dillwyn Miles, in Haverfordwest, ending his time in the county as the landlord of the Brook Inn at St Ishmaels, and as town clerk and financial officer to Pembroke Town Council.
Pennar and Llanion Ward vacancies Three new town councillors are soon to be selected for Pembroke Dock, two standing for the Pennar Ward, and one other for the Llanion Ward. The two vacancies for Pennar occurred when Martello Tower West resident, Guy Anderson resigned, and Philip Gwyther of Cross Park, was previously disqualified for lack of attendance at town council meetings . Guy Anderson said he had to resign due to personal circumstance that prevented him from performing his duties as a town councillor. The new Pennar Ward town councillors are expected to offer support and advice to all community members based within the Pennar and Bufferland area of the town.
