Shuttered since the end of Winter Term 2020, the doors to the Viking Room Lawrence’s bar and social meeting place were thrown open to student patronage on May 12. Fourteen months have passed since the last droughts were poured in that space.
While the Viking Room has been the home to pints and conversations on-campus many a night since 1969, the world has changed in the past year, and so the Viking Room has changed with it. According to the VR’s staff supervisor Greg Griffin, social distancing, masking indoors, limited capacity and outdoor-only seating are the rules for the Spring Term 2021 in order to keep the doors open and students healthy.

Asian Americans are the fastest growing ethnic group in the United States. Comedian Hari Kondabolu reassured the group projected to become the statistical minority by 2042: “Don’t freak out, white people!” he said, “You were the minority when you came to this country.” Those lines begin the final installment of PBS’ five-episode feature documentary,
Asian Americans, which was streamed at the Pan-Asian Organization’s (PAO) second Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPIHM) event. The series takes on the herculean task of narrating the expansive but buried history of the eponymous group.

On Saturday, Apr. 17, Lawrence International (LI) hosted their annual Cabaret event, this year subtitled “Flying Higher than Ever.” Anticipating continued COVID-19 restrictions the following spring, the LI board began planning their yearly show after they were forced to cancel 2020’s performances. This year, they chose to pivot to a pre-recorded video, rather than the in-person performances that usually take place in Stansbury Theater. This year’s show was made up of music videos, short films and dance videos put together by cultural clubs and various individuals throughout the community, all interspersed with short videos showcasing traditional clothing from countries represented on the Lawrence campus.
