Magical moments through the camera lens brought into focus

While 2020 was, by any stretch of the imagination a strange year, it did not stop members of Mallow Camera Club capturing some magical memories through the camera lens. That was very much evident through the high standard of entries to the club s Image of the Year competition, the results of which were recently announced by the organising committee over Zoom. The competition attracted 33 entries, with each entrant submitting one colour and one mono image across four grades, which were judged online by a trio of expert judges. They were Helen Hanafin, a member of Dublin Camera Club and an Irish Photographic Federation (IPF) approved judge; multi-award winning Cork-based fine art photographer and educator Mike Brown and author/photographer David Gibbins of the Beeston Camera Club in Nottinghamshire.

Gentle giant Jack lived for the land and the craic

The death occurred recently of John (Jack) O Brien from Ramsgrange, who was known as a gentle giant and a hard working man who loved the land and spending tome with family and friends. Jack was born in Woodbine Avenue, Ramsgrange (but more commonly known as Ban Aiteann to people near and far), the son of Tommy and Peggy O Brien and brother to Tommy, Willie, Noel, Pat, Triona, Ollie and Derry. Jack was the second eldest in the family of eight siblings. As a child, Jack always had big features (such as shoulders and hands) and was the tallest out of the O Brien family; which led to him being called Big Jack at the age of about ten, or the Long Fella to some.
