Although the Kashmir results aren’t as per party’s expectations, BJP leaders ET spoke with said the party “has been successful in unlocking the Valley’s door”. In Jammu, the party did well and in six out of 10 districts BJP can elect its chairman on its own.

The People s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) has bagged a large chunk of the seats in the Jammu and Kashmir DDC polls and called it a referendum on the abrogation of Article 370. Meanwhile, BJP maintained its stronghold in the Jamu region.

The seven-party Gupkar alliance led by Farooq Abdullah was ahead in the seat tally in the maiden District Development Council polls in Jammu and Kashmir by winning or leading in 112 seats out of 280 on Tuesday, followed by the BJP which had won 52 seats, including three in the Kashmir valley for the first time, and was frontrunner in 18.

The trends in most seats in the maiden DDC elections are in accordance with expectations - the BJP strengthening its position in Jammu division while the PAGD, which includes regional heavyweights National Conference and People s Democratic Party, is ahead in the Valley.

SRINAGAR | JAMMU: The People s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD), an amalgam of seven political parties, was ahead in 73 seats and the BJP in 50 as votes for elections to District Development Councils in Jammu and Kashmir were counted on Tuesday, officials said. The Congress was trailing in number three position with leads in 21 seats in the trends available

As per official data, 2178 candidates are in the fray across Jammu and Kashmir to elect 14 DDC members for each of the 20 districts.
In anticipation of the counting, authorities detained three PDP leaders Sartaj Madni, Peer Mansoor and Naeem Akhter on Monday. No details are known about the cases they were detained in. PDP is a key constituent of the PAGD, one of the main stakeholders in the DDC polls.
Theis election meant for developmental activities will see the fate of various former aw makers and the ministers as well. It will also offer a clear trend of the politics after the abrogation of Article 370.

PDP leader Waheed Para, under arrest for his alleged links with militants, was leading in his Pulwama constituency by a huge margin.
