doctors don t need extra barriers to treat addiction. what do we do? that s significant the answer to that is evolving. we re in the middle of this epidemic and trying to figure that out. we have to conceptualize addiction as a chronic relapsing illness, even if we don t believe it is one. that s a model for our time. then we have to build an infrastructure so that any patient deal with addiction can walk into the emergency room, primary care office, pediatric office, maternity ward and say, i have addiction. will you help me? and the answer to be a resounding yes. plus your insurance company will pay for it, right? until we get insurance companies paying for it, doctors, no matter how much education you get them, are not going to provide this service. it s the carrot and the stick. it s very simple. what a great discussion. let me continue it with nbc news medical correspondent dr. john torres who joins me now.
