Shelter Island Reporter obituary: Kolina May Reiter - Shelter Island Reporter

(Credit: Reporter File Photo) Kolina May Reiter passed away gently on April 27, 2021 in the company of family and loved ones. She was 82. Born Kolina May Nevel on May 22, 1938 to May and John Barice Nevel on Shelter Island, she was a true “harelegger.” Her life on Shelter island is irreplaceable, her family said. Kolina’s mother’s and father’s families were from Cornwall, Canada and immigrated to Long Island in the early 1900s, and followed May’s sisters, Jessie Price and Margaret Oliver, to Shelter Island, where they raised their family of Kolina and her brothers, Malvin (Mal) and Barice.

Family celebrates fighter Jacques as she turns 99

“She is a fighter, for sure,” said her granddaughter, Kimberly English. The family celebrated Jacques with a surprise drive-by parade last Saturday, part of a plan to give her the best birthday celebration she’s ever had, said English, who organized the parade. Jacques turned 99 on Monday, Feb. 15. Up until a few months ago, said English, it felt like her grandmother might live to 200, and though the family has seen a slight decline over the past few months, she remains amazingly resilient. Jacques has been a Cumberland resident in the same home in Monastery Heights for more than 70 years, where she raised her five children.

Year in Review: Newark s biggest stories in 2020

It was the year history will remember, but we all wish we could forget. The coronavirus dominated the year’s headlines and brought life as we knew it to a halt. Thousands of Delawareans were infected with the virus, businesses were decimated, schools scrambled to find ways to teach kids online, face masks became a legal requirement, and everyone learned what it meant to practice “social distancing.” The pandemic wasn’t the only national story that also had an impact in Newark – the presidential election and calls for social justice were also big topics of conversation here. In the midst of it all, the city weathered a tropical storm, the Main Street construction project was completed, Christina School District passed a referendum while going through a major leadership change, the murder of a Newark Charter School student prompted an outpouring of grief in the community, the city got two new council members, and a new high school opened in Newark.
