A brush fire forced the closure of Highway 89 near the Lockett Meadow turnoff Thursday afternoon. Forest service officials say the “Peaks Fire” burned about two acres and it started at around 12:30 p.m. just off the highway. Both directions of Highway 89 were closed for over two hours while crews from the Forest Service, Summit Fire and Medical, and others worked the fire. There’s no word on what started the Peaks Fire, but officials remind travelers don’t throw cigarettes out of the window and if you are pulling a trailer, make sure its chains are up off the ground.
