Our topic is religious pacifist and the American Revolution. Often we think about military action, so perhaps a topic on pacifists or those who refuse to take military action is an interesting angle. But, let me begin by telling you about an incident that took place in april of 1778. This is the spring just after valley forge. 12 members of the church were arrested by local county official, they were brought to easton which was the county seat in North Hampton county in pennsylvania. They were paraded through the streets, tied together with ropes around their next like common criminals. We might be wondering what was their crime . Essentially their crime was the fact that their religious conviction prohibited them from joining the cause of independence and from pledging their loyalty to the new state of pennsylvania that would be formed.
