Pablo John Garcia issued this clarification to rectify a local newspaper report that the airport will be renamed as Lapu-Lapu International Airport following the approval on third reading of House Bill No. 8986. Garcia explained that the facility will be called as it is as the bill merely seeks to name the domestic and international terminals of the airport as Lapu-Lapu Domestic Terminal and Lapu-Lapu International Terminal. He further explained that this is a substitute bill following a compromise brokered by House Speaker Lord Allan Velasco and House Committee on Transportation Chairman Samar Rep. Edgar Sarmiento between the proponents, led by Rep. Paz Radaza of Lapu-Lapu City, and the opponents of the bill, led by Garcia.

It s still Mactan Cebu International Airport, PJ clarifies

SunStar CEBU. The Cebu Mactan International Airport. (SunStar File) + IT WILL still be named Mactan Cebu International Airport. Representative Pablo John Garcia (Cebu, Third District) clarified this after news items in some local dailies claimed that House Bill 8986, approved on third reading before Congress went on recess on March 18, seeks to rename the airport to Lapulapu International Airport. Garcia said the bill merely seeks to name the domestic and international terminals of the airport to Lapulapu Domestic Terminal and Lapulapu International Terminal, while retaining the name Mactan Cebu International Airport for the entire facility itself. He added that this is a substitute bill following a compromise brokered by Speaker Lord Allan Velasco and Committee on Transportation Chairman Representative Edgar Sarmiento (Samar, 1st District) between the proponents, led by Representative Paz Radaza of Lapulapu City, and the opponents of the bill, led by Garcia.

Pablo John Garcia said there is no “compelling reason” to change the airport’s name as he pointed out that this move would only “erase more than 50 years of history of the airport.” Garcia called on the House Committee on Transportation to also consider the position of other provincial leaders, more in particular officials of the provincial government now headed by his sister, Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia. However, Garcia is facing a formidable force of supporters of the measure that includes Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea and Speaker Lord Allan Velasco, who co-authored one of the pending bills.

Raul del Mar. I urged the City Council to name a street after him. (Renaming a national street needs congressional approval). Sculptures or human-size statues of del Mar should be installed at the CPA and the airport. An annex building inside the VSMMC compound should be named after him. I think I can say this without fear of contradiction that del Mar introduced developments in his district, specifically, and in the entire city, in general. He brought in both hard (infrastructure) and soft (livelihood and assistance) projects in his district. He authored and crafted laws of local and national significance that benefited his c
