Celebrating Arbor Day

The Payson Lions Club and the Friends of Payson Parks and Recreation helped the town spruce up the Diamondback fields at Rumsey Park with a donation of two mature trees on Arbor Day. “We have a vision of trees all along the way here,” said Cris Gerard, incoming president for the club. Her vision coincides with the town. “This will create a screening line of trees and align them with a walking path,” said Courtney Spawn, the director of Payson’s Parks and Recreation of future development. The trees, one a red maple and the other a red oak, already stand taller than an adult.

First ever paintball event a smashing success

Katie Edelbrock grew up playing paintball. On Saturday, Edelbrock got to pass that tradition on to her 15-year-old son Chris, playing alongside him in several games of paintball at the Payson Multi-Event Center. From the lack of paint on her, Edelbrock knew what she was doing, especially since she was vastly outnumbered by pre-teen boys. The town sponsored the paintball tournament, bringing in staff from the Denver-based American Paintball Coliseum (APC) Saturday. From 8 a.m. to roughly 1 p.m., participants ran around the forest north of the event center where APC had set up 10-plus obstacles, shooting green colored paintballs at each other during 15-minute rounds. When hit, it left participants with white paint splotches.

A perfect time to fish Green Valley lakes

Fishing, like the weather, is heating up at Green Valley Park. Rainbow trout stockings will continue through the end of April and PowerBait, corn, worms, and mealworms seem to bring in trout pretty consistently. Spinners and flies are also working well. With the water temperatures warming up, the other fish in the lake are becoming more active. Now through early May, the crappies make their shoreline appearance. During the cooler months, and then again when it gets hot, they are deep. The crappies are the first fish to move into the shallows to spawn. Their numbers close to shore will increase over the next few weeks, so this is a great time to fish Green Valley Lake.
