(WAFF) - As of Wednesday, there are no more protections against eviction for failure to pay rent. A federal judge ruled in favor of the Alabama Association of Realtors after it sued to stop the CDC’s eviction moratorium. For months there have been no state rulings protecting people from evictions, only federal ones. But as of Wednesday, that’s over. At least for now.

This is money that could help an estimated 40 million Americans who owe back rent or are struggling to pay next month’s rent. However, the new rental assistance comes with very specific qualifications that renters in need should know. “They have to be at 80 percent or below area median income, and area localities are required to have a preference to people who are 50 percent or below area median income,” said Diane Yentel with the National Low-Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC).
