Phase-outs of two forms of telecoms technology are under way in Russia and Ukraine. While the contexts differ, both phase-outs aim to improve and modernise end user connectivity – eventually.
In Russia, the state-opened operator Rostelecom plans to decommission all payphones in settlements with a population of more than 1,000 people. It will do the same where the population is less than 1,000 people in cases where 2020 traffic was less than one minute per month.
New Orleans to remove dozens of abandoned pay phones
New Orleans is removing dozens of abandoned pay phone kiosks across the city that have become obsolete with the widespread use of cell phones, the city announced.
In a news release, the city said that a contractor, Hard Rock Construction, LLC, would be removing a total of 77 pay phone kiosks. After the kiosks are removed they will be put up at public auction. The first batch of 10 kiosks would be removed from the Central City neighborhood.
“This is a small project in dollars, but substantial in terms of the impact to people’s everyday lives,” said Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Ramsey Green in the news release. “Removing these outdated kiosks is a big quality-of-life win for residents who live in these neighborhoods.”

not too long ago we had pay phones everywhere. and using pay phones was not in and of itself suspicious, but when you have a cell phone, a home phone and phones at your office, the fact that you go a couple of blocks off your normal route to and from home to use a pay phone, that is suspicious. once we did the legal paperwork to get the records from the pay phone and we saw that she was calling pagers in new york city. and those particular numbers we knew were associated with cuban espionage. and our suspicions were that she was punching in codes, three or four digits. we knew she was communicating with a pager, sending signals. that told us she was still active. so we saw her making all these pay phone calls. the timing of which corresponded with encrypted high-frequency messages being transmitted to
