City Hall tower will be replaced in major project
City officials have decided to complete a full removal and replacement of the Pawtucket City Hall tower facade. (Breeze photo by Ethan Shorey)
PAWTUCKET – A top-to-bottom reconstruction of the downtown’s centerpiece architecture is now in the works after officials determined that a facelift for the Pawtucket City Hall tower wouldn’t be enough.
Joe Morais, project leader at the Pawtucket Department of Public Works, wrote in a memo last week that the city has decided on a full removal and replacement of the current tower rather than a short-term maintenance program that was once thought viable.

Building for sale, but Seven Stars owners say they’re tied to Pawtucket
The old Major Electric building on High Street has been listed as available, and its owners, who had planned to bring a Seven Stars bakery there, are now reassessing their options.
PAWTUCKET – Owners of the old Major Electric building at 111 High Street are making it available in a possible sale, but they say that does not mean they plan to abandon plans for a new Seven Stars bakery here.
Bill and Tracy Daugherty purchased the building across from Pawtucket City Hall for $1,137,500 in January 2020, but they told The Breeze more than a month ago that the pandemic had hindered their progress in creating the new bakery space and offices, where they planned to expand to from an existing Pawtucket space at the Hope Artiste Village on Main Street.

With planned Blackstone statue, Pawtucket has a moment of reckoning
Installation of this monument of William Blackstone, by artist Peruko Coppacadi, has been put on hold as planners solicit feedback on the man being recognized in the statue.
PAWTUCKET – As debates about the future of existing statues continue to swirl, Pawtucket is now grappling with its own questions about a monument that has yet to be installed.
After historian Richard Kazarian researched the history behind the William Blackstone Monument at the corner of Roosevelt Avenue and Exchange Street, the project has subsequently been delayed.
As Kazarian sees it, a planned brief reference to the fate of indigenous peoples at the base of a 14-foot tall Blackstone statue in a small park at the corner of Roosevelt Avenue and Exchange Street was totally inappropriate and needed to be rethought.

Owners re-engaging on downtown Seven Stars Bakery
The Seven Stars Bakery would be located in the old Major Electric building, pictured in the foreground across from Pawtucket City Hall.
PAWTUCKET – More than a year after the City Council passed a tax treaty with the owners of Seven Stars Bakery smoothing the path for a new bakery across from Pawtucket City Hall, those owners say they’re getting the gears of their project back into motion.
“We put things on hold when the pandemic hit but have recently re-engaged with the architects and designers,” said Bill Daugherty, who owns the bakery with his wife, Tracy. “We’ll know a lot more in a month or so once the cost estimates start coming in.”
