City council offers support for tech millage renewal
The City of Monroe has thrown its support behind the renewal of the county-wide education technology millage, which voters will consider in a May 4 special election.
Council on Monday unanimously approved a resolution of support for the one-mill levy renewal which, if passed, would extend the millage another five years.
State law says the Monroe County Intermediate School District is responsible for collecting the revenue raised by the millage. The ISD and the county’s public school districts, along with New Bedford Academy and Triumph Academy, each receive a share of the revenue based on enrollment numbers.
Monroe City Council has narrowly agreed to move forward with a partial conversion of Cass and Harrison Streets, despite loud and persistent outcry from residents who believe the project is dangerous and unnecessary.
Council voted 4-3 Monday to approve the conversion of Cass and Harrison to two-way traffic from Fourth Street to First Street, a departure from the initial plan to convert almost the entirety of both streets from their current, one-way configurations.
Mayor Robert Clark, Councilwomen Kellie Vining and Paula Whitman, and Councilman John Iacoangeli voted for the conversion, while Councilwoman Michelle Germani and Councilmen Andrew Felder and Brian Lamour voted against it.
