Strong rip currents. For thats lets turn to chief meteorologist doug hill. The strong currents will continue at least tomorrow and probably into friday as well and then into the weekend as cristobal, the hurricane responsible for this moves more quickly to the north atlantic, then we should see some improvement. Were looking at our weather bug station at 2nd street and boardwalk. The weather is not the problem, it is simply an effect of the rip created by the strong wave action well offshore from hurricane cristobal located well to the southeast of cape hatterasers. It will pass to the north, northwest of bermuda tomorrow. And the water should slowly lay down a bit as we head through, saturday, sunday, and into monday. As far as the rain goes were watching these little thunderstorm clusters north and west of martinsburg and west of hagerstown. Were thinking most will fall apart before they get anywhere close to the metro area. This is ahead of a cold front they will give us relief from
To the sousa bridge. Its nice to see the 14th street bridge moving for a change. Sunrise is at 6 33 this morning. We are looking pretty good with temperatures which will be getting into the mid 80s. High about 87 but it will feel less humid as drier air is moving in from pennsylvania this morning. A few of those clouds, you can follow them. There were showers and storms that hit the mountains and out in West Virginia yesterday, came through dry on that front. Were not going to have any rain chances till perhaps the weekend. This morning upper 60s in hagerstown and cumberland. Weve got 70 now in gaithersburg. La plata 72 with mid70s here in d. C. Over toward easton at 75. The difference is once you get south of 70, the humidity levels are still way up. So
Further south and hurricane cristobal is indeed almost 1,000 miles away not only south of us, but also offshore. Its not impacting the immediate land masses of the United States now and it wont make land fall, so good news there, but even hundreds of miles away the winds and waves are being picked up a little bit, especially underneath the surface. So even though these waves do not look very significant in the 5 to 10foot range, even as you go about 20 miles offshore youre just getting to the 10 foot range, doesnt sound that dangerous, but you have more going on underneath the surface and thats when you of get the rip currents developing. What they do is they spread out at the shoreline, but they pull you in when youre close. So some rip current safety things to keep in mind here, do not swim on unguarded beaches and stay out of the water when rip current risk is high, which it will be through tomorrow evening. We also need to swim parallel to the shoreline if were caught in a run curr
