Opinion: GRIST FOR THE MILLS: Shakin off the rust

Insurrection effort
I was surprised by the overall response to my annual “run for office” column. Not so much because people were bothered that I support running for office, but instead, the reaction to my points regarding the insurrection effort a few weeks back. It’s disheartening to see the number of locals who not only believe Trump rightfully won the election (he didn’t), but that it was somehow antifa agitators who stormed the capitol (it wasn’t) on Jan. 6 rather than Trump supporters and QAnon adherents.

Happy holidays
On behalf of the COA Board of Directors and the entire staff at the Council on Aging, I want to wish you all a happy Hanukah and a very merry Christmas.
Thank you to all those who dropped off gifts for the elderly and disabled in our community. We had a lot of happy faces. We truly live in a community that cares.
Lasagna give away
Last week we had a wonderful treat made by the National Honor Society students from Millbury High School. These wonderful teems made and gave out 50 pans of lasagna. The elderly also received small table talk pies, candy canes and big smiles from the teens. BRAVO! We love that they had this great idea to give back to the community. A small act of kindness goes a long way. This event had Santa in attendance. He greeted everyone and we loved having him come for a visit.

The Beast and Geoffrey the Giraffe spread Christmas cheer at foster home

Legendary rugby player and member of the World Cup-winning Springboks team, Tendai Beast Mtawarira wanted to spread some Christmas joy and hope through his foundation to less fortunate children.
The Beast Foundation teamed up with Toys R Us to give toys to the children and toiletries from Unilever. On Tuesday, they were at Summerhill House in the Dolphin Coast north of Durban.
The Ubuhle Bezwe and Thusong Children’s Home in Johannesburg also received a visit from the rugby player and his foundation.
Summerhill House is a foster home for nine babies and three children, but they also do community care for the struggling families around them. They take in babies who have either been orphaned or placed in their care. It is not an orphanage.
