State lawmakers are considering legislation to allow grocery stores to sell beer and wine. The actual intent of the bill is to entice grocers to open up stores in food deserts or priority funding areas.
Although consumers love the idea, there is a lot of opposition from lawmakers and health experts. They question the wisdom of potentially contributing to one public health problem while trying to resolve another.
There is no shortage of liquor stores on street corners in Baltimore City. What s missing are grocers selling fresh vegetables and fruits.
“This could be a game changer and 47 other states already do this. So, we are trying to control the manner that we can do it,” said bill sponsor, Sen. Cory McCray, D-Baltimore City.
