west, the unrelenting heat shattering temperature records and adding fuel to wildfires. death valley california expected to reach near 130 degrees again today. more than 24 million people remain under heat alerts across the western u.s. let s get more from cnn s paul ver cammen in los angeles. reporter: we caught a break, temperatures dipped, the breeze picked up, 80 degrees in los angeles. in other parts of the county, scorching temperatures, an excessive heat warning for the antelope valley and other parts of california. and officials warning of heat-related illnesses. and then just across the border in nevada, it hit a record 117 degrees in las vegas. that tied a record, and it prompted a conservation request from utility officials. they told everyone to conserve power between 6:00 and 9:00 at night. they were citing the excessive heat as well as a problem with

the power grid. that s because of wildfires that moved their power into california and nevada. the big culprit here, a massive fire burning in southwest oregon. it is called the boot hill fire, and those flames were threatening the power grid, so californians also told to conserve energy. just a scorching weekend throughout california, and something interesting, we talk a lot about record highs. how about the lows. at one point in indio, california, it did not get below 89 degrees at night, and that tied a record. and they re forecasting more heat in the coming days. reporting from los angeles, i m paul vercammen, christine, laura. that s just incredible. four people are now in custody after police found a cache of weapons and ammunition in a hotel near the site of tomorrow night s mlb s all star game. police credit an astute hotel

interesting that the highlighters were requested but no questions. i thought that perhaps it came from the fact that in california and in this case the jurors were allowed to take notes. so, rather than come back into the courtroom and ask for read-back of testimony, which was sort of the practice when i was practicing law in washington, d.c., as a prosecutor, perhaps they needed the highlighters to remind themselves of the most powerful evidence that came in front of them or perhaps to go through those jury instructions. remember, there s only one count here, involuntary manslaughter, but the jury instructions were actually quite kmrefl. that is because this case is much more of a medical malpractice type case rather than sort of the typical hom stied that we all see on csi and that sort of thing, homicide by gun, by knife. so perhaps they needed it to weed through the elements that were outlined in the jury instructions, which again were pretty complicated. reporter: le

europe, and just now getting there to joplin for what is just a huge disaster in the united states, has paid so much attention to it. what are people there saying about the president s visit expected? i think that they re very glad that president is coming here. i haven t heard one shred or word of criticism from any of the towns people as to why didn t he leave europe sooner. they re glad he s coming. they ve been very resolute in the effort of trying to clean this up and rebuild and, of course, honor and bury the dead and find the missing people. there was no stinging criticism of the president for staying in europe and they re all sort of looking forward to tomorrow and the president, of course, will speak at a local university and so will the governor of missouri. it s expected to be, you know, quite an emotional memorial service, joe. certainly is. we ll be watching. thanks so much for that, paul vercammen in joplin. to find out how you can help those affected by the flooding
