DULUTH Crews from Wisconsin and Minnesota departments of natural resources have been busy capturing and tagging thousands of walleyes in the St. Louis River estuary this spring, and then recapturing as many as they can to estimate the walleye population.

It’s been an unusual spring so far, with waves of record warmth and sunshine followed by blasts of winterlike cold and even some snow.
But the general consensus is that Northland lakes lost their ice 2-3 weeks earlier than average and have been warming up ahead of schedule, pushing fish to spawn a little earlier than usual if not over a longer period of time.
