While the Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots series highlighted the Thursday (Sept. 7) card at Woodbine Mohawk Park as the feature races for the evening, Frenchy Hanover stole the show in a $17,000 condition trot as the three-year-old filly gave Sandi Lawrence her first career training win.
Outlawgrabbingears cruised to a very handy win in Monday’s $13,000 Horses & Geldings Preferred 2 Handicap at The Raceway at Western Fair District, and that makes it back-to-back triumphs in the top class for the five-year-old son of Smart Shark-Grand Slam Woman.
In rein to trainer/driver Paul Davies, Outlawgrabbingears sprinted to the lead from Post 6 and never looked back. The gelding powered through fractions of :27.3, :56.4 and 1:25.3 before using a :28.4 final quarter to win by 5-1/4 lengths over Easton Beach in 1:54.2. Cheddar Bay rounded out the Trifecta ticket in the six-horse affair.
Sent off as the 1-5 favourite, Outlawgrabbingears made it 24 wins from 51 starts for owners Paul & Nicole Davies and Deborah Pinel. The pacer recently surpassed $300,000 in career earnings.
The trip was a tough one for Veyron in Monday’s co-featured $11,500 Preferred 2 for trotters, but that didn’t stop the gelding from battling his way into the winner’s circle for the tandem of driver J Harris and trainer Paul Cameron.
Veyron got away third in the five-horse affair while Zack To The Max powered to the lead and carved out early fractions of :29 and :59.3. Veyron started his first-over bid on the way to the half, and after making steady gains he showed a short lead while racing parked past the three-quarter pole in 1:28.3. Veyron then used a :30.1 closing frame to win by a length over Zack To The Max in 1:58.4. Race favourite Power And Grace was third.
