In an essay that ran in the New York Times a few years ago, journalist and author Constance Hale gave a succinct analysis of the way in which politicians employ the passive voice to deflect responsibility:
“The most pilloried use of the passive voice might be that famous expression of presidents and press secretaries, ‘mistakes were made,’” Hale wrote, adding that through the years, “pols have used the passive voice to spin the news, avoid responsibility or hide the truth.”
