Beekman Ale House Co-owner Luke Sheeran calls their shakshuka dish Eggs in Purgatory because it s a hearty item that makes for a nice brunch or breakfast, especially when served with the bar s freshly baked garlic knots.
Paul Molakides, owner of Boro6 Wine Bar in Hastings-on-Hudson said his restaurant originally called the entree Mediterranean baked eggs but found it didn t sell. So, they rebranded it to shakshuka and voila! Now, said Molakides, The dish sells like crazy!
For those who ve never had it, the eat-anytime-skillet dish is a combination (the word shakshuka literally means a mixture) of tomatoes, onions and spices with poached eggs on top (the trick is in getting them to be perfectly runny). Often, feta cheese is sprinkled on top though at Beekman Ale House they use parmesan. In some cases, it s also served with add-ons such as avocado, eggplant and/or sausage.
