But let me start tonight with this. The Government Shutdown was shattered just hours ago by the death of a woman who just minutes before that had crashed her car into the white house gate. A city already tensed up with a compound of unpaid salaries required essential services and an uncertain future was shaken by the crash at the white house gates. A televised car chase, the violent death of a woman driver, a young child in that vehicle witnessing the horrible end. [ gunfire ] the death will no doubt become an iconic tragedy in this period of Government Shutdown, driven by the hatred of the president s Affordable Care act and the compulsion of his critics on the hard right to punish him politically. Whatever mix of causes drove the woman to this day, the event is now a vivid tragedy played out in the streets of the nations capital. We get the latest now from nbc news justice correspondent pete williams. Pete, give us a sense of this. What do we know . Well, we dont know the motive. We
Come in this building. Today we know all the shots fired at the scene were from officers in pursuit of the suspect. The Capitol Police officers injured in this incident will recover. While all of this was happening, Miriam Careys 1yearold little girl was in the back of that speeding car. Nbc news justice correspondent Pete Williams has been following this story from the very beginning and joins me now. Pete, what more do we know about the background of miriam carey, what her family might be saying about the possible motivation for why she had come to d. C. . Reporter well, in terms of her background, she was a dental hygienist who had been recently fired from her job in stamford, connecticut. She did have this child just over one year old. And what her what police tell us is that her relatives and family members have told them that she had a real tough time with the pregnancy and suffered from postpartum depression and that just recently she had begun to become delusional, that she had
Well, its friday evening, its the start of the weekend. I think Speaker Boehner needs probably a really stiff drink tonight. Its been a rough week. Because you see the pendulum is not swinging in favor of the republicans. Theyve tried all week long. The fight against obama care for republicans has been all about lies and deception all week long. And now theyre down to the shutdown and they have very few options. A lot of americans are out there i think wondering what are the republicans thinking. What is their strategy . Whats their next move going to be. Well, now we know. This is rand paul and Mitch Mcconnell, talking about winning and losing. Im all wired up here. I just did see i just go over and over again, were willing to compromise, were willing to negotiate. I dont think they polltested we wont negotiate. I think its awful for them to say that over and over again too. Yeah, i do too. I just came back from a twohour meeting with him and it was basically the same view privately a

Well get to the latest on the Government Shutdown in a moment. First, that dramatic scene on capitol hill streets yesterday where a woman who is suspected of trying to run down a white house barricade was eventually shot and killed on the streets near the senate. It all began yesterday afternoon with repor
Lower chamber embarrassing. On the floor of the senate this morning, majority leader harry reid condemned the piecemeal approach being taken by republicans. Its time for my republican colleagues to do a gut check, madam president. Republicans in the house have posed one cant pass idea after another. Its time for republicans to stop throwing one crazy idea after another at the wall in hopes that something will stick. Nothing has stuck. Theres been a sensible plan to reopen the government right in front of House Republicans all along. Clean, sixweek resolution that opens the government today, and we passed it in the senate last week. So the house and the senate may be continuing debate today, but as the hours creep by, the only thing that seems to be progressing is denial over the Affordable Care act being the law of the land and over just who caused the shutdown in the first place. Last night senator ted cruz was adamant it was democrats who caused the shutdown. The house of representat
