Verona Murphy was the big spender in the 2019 by-election, her former party Fine Gael shelling out over €18,000 on her campaign, with an additional spend of over €12,000 by the Ramsgrange woman s team. Fianna Fáil candidate Malcolm Byrne topped the poll in the Wexford by-election in the late November election, securing 12,506 first preference votes and it was a case of the two big parties battling it out in the spending stakes, as his campaign s bill came to close to €27,000. Murphy, who left Fine Gael to go on and win a seat in February s general election as an Independent, secured 9,543 first preferences with Labour s George Lawlor behind her on 8,024 votes.
