Skipper Luke Chambers and Freddie Sears were on target as Town ended their five-game goalless and winless run with a 2-0 home victory over Burton Albion in the first ever competitive meeting between the two sides. Chambers headed in a Sears cross in the 15th minute and Sears ended his own 38-game goal drought two minutes from the end to seal their first October victory under Mick McCarthy’s management.
Midfielder Panutche Camara looks set to make his Town debut but boss Kieran McKenna says it will be a younger Blues team and squad which takes on Cambridge United in Tuesday’s final Papa Johns Trophy group game with his side all but qualified for the next stage (KO 7pm).
Sone Aluko has scored his first two Ipswich Town goals to give the Blues a 2-1 half-time lead at Cambridge, James Brophy having pulled one back for the U’s five minutes from the end of the half.
Joe Ironside scored an 88th-minute leveller as Cambridge United came from two goals behind to draw 2-2 with the Blues at the Abbey Stadium. Town looked to be coasting to victory after Sone Aluko had netted on 10 and 36, his first Blues goals, but James Brophy pulled one back for the U’s before half-time and the home side completed a deserved comeback when Ironside headed home two minutes from the end.
Town make the relatively short trip to Cambridge United on Saturday looking to win back-to-back league matches for the first time under Paul Cook and record three victories on the trot in all competitions.
