The no-cost equine assisted therapy takes veterans through four phases to help them mitigate mental health struggles.
Veteran Coordinator Paul Cuellar said the veterans also gain a companion. Horses don t talk back. You can really tell the horses anything and they won t talk back and they won t give you, they won t judge you, Cuellar said.
The first phase is therapeutic riding, in which the rhythmic movement of the brain helps to calm the veteran. Cuellar said the horse s actions reflect how the rider is feeling and allows them to look inside. A lot of the veterans get up there and try to give this outward appearance of Oh, I m great. I m fine. I m happy. They get on the horse and the horse tries to take off running or the horse is just very anxious and nervous, Cuellar explained.
