CLEVELAND, Ohio The family of a man who died of suicide in the Cuyahoga County Jail about a month after top county officials ignored pleas for changes aimed at decreasing inmate suicides filed a lawsuit Monday against the county and former jail officials.
The lawsuit comes nearly two years after Brenden Kiekisz hanged himself in his jail cell on Dec. 27, 2018 and died three days later.
Jail staff knew Kiekisz took medication for bipolar disorder and depression and that had tried to commit suicide two days before his arrest, according to documents previously obtained by cleveland.com. He never received a medical screening at the jail and was placed in general population, instead of on suicide watch, according to documents and county emails previously obtained by cleveland.com.
