The community's downtown will be transformed into Little Bavaria on Saturday, Sept. 30, with plenty of German food and drink, live music from Matt Hodek and the Dakota Dutchmen, and much more.
This year, Downtown Alive placed 95 of those showy flower pots in the downtown area, and another 40 went to businesses around town that paid their own way to participate in the program, said Patty LaBarre, a longtime downtown beautification advocate who heads the effort.
Fresh off the success of Detroit Lakes' first-ever 'Polar-try Poetry Walk,' held during Polar Fest 2022, mother-daughter duo Mary Beth and Kendra Gilsdorf are planning a summer poetry walk with poetry submissions to be printed and displayed in the colorful downtown flower pots, next to all the fresh blooms. Submissions for the Flowerpot Poetry Walk are being accepted through Monday, May 30.
The first meeting of the new commission was held Wednesday, March 23. Members discussed the results of a community survey that had been done a couple of years back, in which respondents gave the community "a solid 'B'" grade on its various creative and cultural endeavors, according to commission chair Amy Stoller Stearns.
