As the mad rush for COVID-19 vaccines wanes, Texas is shifting its distribution strategy to focus on smaller providers, setting up a crucial test for the state as it attempts not only to get shots in people’s arms but to track that information accurately.
Over the past five months, Texas health officials have focused on sending vaccines to mass vaccination sites, pharmacy chains, hospitals and local health departments providers that administer thousands of doses a week. The state also launched a mammoth data collection effort.

Liberty County vaccine hub seeing increase in patients from larger counties

CLEVELAND, Texas – The Texas Emergency Hospital in Liberty County was designated as a vaccination hub by the state about eight weeks ago. Since then, medical workers have vaccinated over 10,000 patients in a county of less than 90,000 people.
As the chief operation officer, Patti Foster, walked through the hospital, her passion for serving patients shined with each step.
“We want to help people. That’s what we’re here for,” Foster said. “When the state told us, ‘You are going to be a vaccine hub.’ We had four days to get everything up and running”.

HOUSTON Friday, the City of Houston received 9,000 new doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, but those hundreds of new appointments filled up in just minutes.
But some people are going to great lengths and distances to get that first dose.
“We couldn’t wait to get here to do it, Jodie Mitchell said.
