the video that we ve been watching from some of our affiliates out of indiana. and we have video of a man believed to be the suspect. appears there handcuffed, getting patted down. the shooting apparently happened in this electrical engineering building. again, that s the latest, we have no ongoing threat. 13 minutes ago, tweeted from purdue university. no reports of injuries. one person is in custody. joining me now in studio, hln law enforcement analyst mike brooks. and jean casarez, cnn legal correspondent in new york. mike brooks, first to you. no ongoing threats. sigh of relief for a lot of people there in west lafayette, indiana. but still, this electrical engineering building still considered a crime scene. absolutely. they lifted the shelter in place for the rest of the school, but i think that was out of an abundance of caution. it said a reporting of a shooting. they didn t say anything about anyone being shot. so we don t know if there was any injuries or not, but they do
well, let s go on the rnl side. there s no empirical data that show police in schools make schools safer or no day that that in genuine formed people make schools safer. the school climate does. the educators themselves. that s up to them. on that sense of whether or not this will get worse over time, i think since sandy hook there s going to be more push to want police in schools. my concern is as you ve mentioned earlier more police and schools need more guns in schools. there s no data that shows more guns in schools makes schools safer. jonathan, i kept thinking, at one point they had all the young people lined up on the school field and were walking them through and patting them down at the end of it. at this point apparently the police knew the circumstance was safe and so they re havipatting the young people down. watching them come out with their hands up and being patted down, i kept wonderinging what s
these kids who are terrified walking out with their hands up and then being patted down. that is now just protocol? i m with you, jake. i m a father of two young kids and as i watch that myself, i get the vision in my eyes of my kid possibly being in that position. it s dramatic but it is a safety issue for the children, for the officers, for the majority of kids that are going out. the police coming in do not know who s involved. they don t know if they have one person or three or four. they are assessing, trying to make sure they don t unintentionally let out someone who is part of a broader plan that they know nothing about and could cause more harm. we know from columbine that there were plans with explosives in the car outside of columbine high school that fortunately, some of which did not detonate but it was part of the killers plan at that time to cause additional harm. so officers have a whole lot of dynamics to consider. where are we evacuating kids to,
