NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - In May, News 3 introduced you to Freckles, a rare lobster who found a new home at the Virginia Living Museum. Now, you can see him in person this Fourth of July weekend!
Experts say the vibrant orange and black shell pattern challenges these lobsters survival in the wild since they are no longer able to camouflage with their natural habitat.
The curiously-colored crustacean recently caught the eye of the cooks at a Red Lobster in Manassas, Virginia.

A particularly special crustacean dodged a death sentence last month.
According to Inside Nova, staff at a Virginia Red Lobster decided to spare the life of an unusual-looking lobster that was originally headed to a plate. The employees were reportedly taken aback by the animal’s vibrant, speckled shell, which was unlike anything they’ve ever seen. They then contacted an expert to find out what kind of animal they were dealing with; and, it turns out, it was one of the most rarest lobsters in the world.
A conservationist informed the restaurant that the animal had a calico-colored shell, which is seen in one of every 30 million lobsters. After realizing how unique the crustacean was, Red Lobster decided to name it “Freckles” and ultimately donated it to Virginia Living Museum in Newport News.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Spared from a pot of boiling water, the new star of the Virginia Living Museum now sits inside a cozy saltwater tank. As a person who loves all lobsters, it was very exciting, said Britt Sorensen, the museum s training and enrichment coordinator.
This lobster is, simply put, lucky. Lobsters are typically underrated, Sorenson said. People usually just walk by and think that it s tasty or looks scary.
But what passersby will soon see on display is Freckles, adorned with golden speckles.
