Zambia : ECZ nets additional 600 000 Voters during the 4 days extension, bringing total to just over 7 million

THE Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) says it has registered over seven million eligible voters for the 2021 general elections. The Commission also said it had managed to register 93 per cent of eligible prisoners as voters to take part in the election. Addressing the press yesterday, ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Patrick Nshindano announced that new statistics showed that less than nine million Zambians were currently eligible to vote. “The Commission had captured a total of 6,407,752 registered voters during phases one, two, three and four of the exercise. The extended four days gave us a figure of 612,997 registered voters, bringing the total number of registered voters for the entire period of the voter registration exercise to a provisional total of 7,020,749,” Nshindano said. “Kindly take note that the figure is provisional as the data collected will be subjected to de-duplication and clean-up process.”

Ndola Central Member of Parliament, Emmanuel Mulenga has cautioned all officers issuing voters cards in his constituency to ensure that they work up to midnight as directed by Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Chief Executive Officer, Patrick Nshindano. ZANIS reports that Mr. Mulenga said adhering to ECZ pronouncement that all centres should close exactly at midnight will give chance to those seeking to obtain voters cards on the final day of the extension period. Mr. Mulenga who toured various registration centres in his constituency said while at the Civic center that he is overwhelmed with the zeal shown by Zambians to register as voters irrespective of them doing it on the final day.

United Party for National Development (UPND) President, Hakainde Hichilema has told the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to abide by the legal provisions which allow it to conduct a continuous voter registration exercise so that it doesn’t leave out any eligible Zambian voter. And Mr. Hichilema says Zambian youths and the general citizenry have a collective responsibility to save the country each time danger looms. Speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka yesterday morning, Mr Hichilema observed that the framers and designers of the Republic Constitution, in a quest to end reckless spending towards endless by-elections and reduce panic ahead of general elections, opted to add suitable provisions in the Constitution that would ensure the sitting Government did not deplete the treasury through the creation of endless by-elections.

Chief Electoral Officer Patrick Nshindano said 6,407,752 people registered as voters during the registration exercise from November 9 to December 12. The Electoral Commission of Zambia has since extended the exercise by another four days from December 17 to December 20 in order to capture more voters.
