An Irish teenager who admitted racially abusing football pundit Ian Wright has escaped a criminal conviction.
Patrick O’Brien, of Sycamore Court, Ashleigh Downs, Tralee, abused the former England striker in private messages on Instagram last May after he lost a Fifa game on PlayStation.
The 18-year-old pleaded guilty to harassing Wright on May 11, contrary to the Non-Fatal Offences Against The Person Act 1997, and sending a message by phone that was grossly offensive, obscene and menacing.
Share An individual wished death upon me because of my skin colour. No judge s claims of naivety or immaturity will ever be acceptable to us. The supposed immaturity and naivety of our attackers is never any comfort. So yeah I am disappointed. I m tired. We are all tired.
The horrific abuse included a string of racial insults and in one message, he wrote: You re like a 65 year old. If I get corona I will cough in your face and give you your death sentence. If I see you I will put you on your death bed.
The 18-year-old later wrote Wright a full apology which the footballer accepted and voluntarily donated 500 Euros to an anti-racism charity.
The sentencing hearing for an Irish teenager who racially abused former England footballer Ian Wright has been postponed after the court received a five-page probation report.
Patrick O’Brien, 18, had been due to be sentenced at Tralee District Court in Co Kerry on Wednesday but the case was pushed back until next week.
O’Brien’s solicitor Patrick Mann described the probation report as “very helpful”.

HENDERSON COUNTY, Tenn. The Tennessee Highway Patrol confirms one person was killed and another was injured in a Wednesday evening wreck on Highway 412 West.
According to a crash report, 26-year-old Haley Stanfill, of Reagan, was killed in the wreck. 26-year-old Patrick Mann, of Brownsville, was also injured.
THP says Mann and Stanfill were travelling westbound, along with a 4-year-old who was not injured in the wreck.
The crash report states a utility trailer attached to a vehicle traveling eastbound became detached, crossing the median into the westbound lane and striking the vehicle driven by Mann.
The driver hauling the trailer was uninjured, and the report shows that all individuals involved were wearing seatbelts.
