Some of you may already have been through our new exhibit open just under two weeks ago on the second floor in the mountain gallery called cowboys and culture. If you havent, i would strongly urge you to. Its just a fascinating collection, and im talking about a large collection, of artifacts, art and other objects that illuminate the connection that i wasnt aware of down through history going back to the cattle days between city of kansas city and amarillo, texas. Expedition is key in u. S. History, the idea of the expedition was to encourage more American Travel up the missouri river, and more american trade with the American Indians. What the story is in south dakota, there is some interesting tales. First of all, when you come into south dakota, you have Sergeant Floyd had just died where the current city of sioux city is. But it was when they got to what is now the city of elk point, south dakota, they elected patrick gass as the new sergeant. It was the first election held in south dakota. Interestingly enough, clarks slave, york, was allowed to vote in that election, highly unusual situation. Farther up the river, they found a mound, supposed to be inhabited by devils. Of course they had to see these devils. But once they got to the top of spirit mountain, what did they see . Their first bison. There was acres and acres of bison on this flatland. Today i am going to show you the original collection that was brought here in october 1853 and selected by the first territo a territorial governor, issac stevens. This is where we warehouse the collection. It is very secure fireproof vault and i am going to take you in there right now. This is what remains at the state library of territorial collection.
