Growing Pains: Female Tobacco Farmers Struggle To Compete

The Guardian MOREEN Tanhara waits patiently for officials to inspect her tobacco. The 49-year-old has travelled nearly 100 miles (150km) overnight in an old lorry to reach Tobacco Sales Floor, an auction house in Harare. Tanhara sits quietly on one of the fragrant sacks she has brought from Guruve, a farming area north of Zimbabwe’s capital, while on the auction floor workers prepare tobacco leaves for the first sales of the season. The auction house attracts farmers from across the country but this year, due to Covid-19 restrictions, only a few are allowed on the auction floor. Dozens more wait outside, among them Chinese tobacco dealers, the country’s main buyers.

2021 Tobacco Marketing Season Commences With High Hopes

Xinhua ZIMBABWE’S 2021 tobacco marketing season opened on Wednesday with hopes that the country will surpass last year’s figures. The highest opening price was 4.30 U.S. dollars per kg, up from 4 dollars last year. According to estimates, about 200 million kg of tobacco will be sold this season, as compared to 180 million kg valued at 452 million dollars that were sold last year. Crop hectarage went up by 6.84 percent from 117,000 hectares in 2019/2020 season to 125,000 hectares this year. The Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) says it expects better quality in this year’s crop despite concerns over crop disease and the effect of waterlogging in some farming areas.
