Beginning July 1 it will be legal in Virginia for an adult to possess up to an ounce of marijuana, and that change in the law is forcing K-9 police dogs across the state into early retirement.
Drug dogs have been trained to alert their handlers in the same manner on multiple drugs, making it impossible to know whether itâs marijuana or some still illegal narcotic being sniffed out. And dogs have no idea if the amount of marijuana they might detect would be within the legal limit.

PATRICK COUNTY, Va. – A man is in custody after stealing an ambulance, leading to a pursuit over county lines Friday morning.
At about 11:12 a.m., Henry County Sheriff Lane Perry said deputies were responding to a crash in Bassett involving a stolen vehicle. Deputies found the suspect injured and unconscious, leading them to place him in an ambulance for treatment.

PATRICK COUNTY, Va, – A woman is in the hospital after her husband shot her in their home Tuesday morning, according to the Patrick County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies and medical crews responded to a house on Union Church Road in Ferrum for reports of an alleged gunshot victim.
When first responders arrived at the house, authorities said they found 45-year-old Melissa Atkins Hale with a gunshot wound in her chest. Medical crews airlifted her to Roanoke Carilion Medical Center for treatment. Authorities said Melissa is in stable condition and is expected to recover.
