France aims to start Notre Dame restoration two years after destructive fire

SHARE France marked the second anniversary of the Notre Dame fire as architects finalised the start of its restoration programme. Since the fire destroyed much of the cathedral s roof and caused its spire to collapse, the extensive rebuild has focused on consolidation, after which restoration work will begin. French President Emmanuel Macron said that while a lot of good work had been accomplished in the past two years, “we also see what remains to be done”. Mr Macron set a five-year restoration target in the immediate aftermath of the fire, which, if met, would make the cathedral accessible by the time Paris hosts the Olympics in summer 2024.

Notre Dame Fire Anniversary: Macron Insists on 2024 Opening Target

16 Apr 2021 French President Emmanuel Macron visited Paris’s Notre Dame Cathedral on the second anniversary of its near-total loss to fire, calling for it to reopen for 2024, apparently whether it was ready or not. Speaking to the workers and craftsmen who have toiled around the clock since the April 2019 fire that gutted Notre Dame, President Emmanuel Macron congratulated those present remarking “bravo” but said “very demanding” work lay ahead because “we will have to meet our targets”. The target the French president refers to is April 15th, 2024, exactly five years after the cathedral started to burn, a mandatory target he himself set in 2019. The date would coincide with the Summer Olympics being hosted by France.

French president to visit Notre Dame, two years on from devastating fire

Two years after a fire tore through Paris’ most famous cathedral and shocked the world, French president Emmanuel Macron is visiting the building site that Notre Dame has become to show that heritage has not been forgotten during the pandemic. Mr Macron plans to inspect the progress of the ambitious rebuilding project at the 12th century monument to give the French public some hope that a completion date will arrive one day, if not in the near future. The president has promised the cathedral will be rebuilt by 2024, although officials acknowledge the work will not be fully complete by then.
